Carsten Otterbach (1970-2018)

My first memory of Morgoth is reading a lukewarm review of Cursed that said something like “the songs aren’t so much songs as compositions, like Mozart throwing around baby blocks — 3 stars.” That sounded right up my alley, so a few years later I bought Odium on cassette and that was it. The intensity of Marc Grewe’s vocal performance and clarity of the mix hit me first, but it was the guitar tones and strangeness of Carsten and Harald’s riffing kept me coming back again and again. Cursed and the other album came much later and while they’ll always be in Odium’s shadow for me (I consider it one of the top 10 death metal albums of all time), Morgoth’s entire catalog has been in steady rotation for years and years. Needless to say, this one stings a bit. RIP, Carsten. ~JM

From Blabbermouth:

Founding MORGOTH member Carsten Otterbach has died after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. The 48-year-old guitarist, who also headed up his own artist management company Direct Management, played on the band’s first two EPs, “Resurrection Absurd” (1989) and “The Eternal Fall” (1990), as well as the first three full-length albums, “Cursed” (1991), “Odium” (1993) and “Feel Sorry For The Fanatic” (1996).

Century Media Records co-founder Robert Kampf:

“With a very heavy heart, I learned that a close friend of 28 years, Carsten Otterbach, has passed. Carsten had a decade long battle with MS (multiple sclerosis). While he was a trooper and battled it hard for a long time, it was one of those battles that eventually take you down. I will always remember Carsten as a very sharp-minded, well-read, business-savvy and, at the same time, very fun-loving, tolerant and simply great guy. He will always live in my heart. Carsten fought very hard for his artists and was honorable as it gets. Legendary are the fights between my late partner Oliver Withöft and Carsten. The two of them fighting was scary if you were in the room, but always a fun story afterwards. Both were good friends and, unfortunately, did not make it to age 50. Farewell, Carsten. You will not be forgotten and [will be] held in very high acclaim by your friends and by several generations of metal artist.”

Demolition Hammer guitarist Derek Sykes:

“Our first tour ever was in 1990 with OBITUARY and MORGOTH. Three young bands from three different cultures crammed together on a bus for two months exploring parts of the world we had only read about. We all formed a bond during those months that even decades later still remain in one form or another. That being said, we mourn the loss of Carsten Otterbach. So many great memories from those days and Carsten (along with Frank Watkins [OBITUARY] and, of course, Vinny Daze [DEMOLITION HAMMER]) were central figures in all of them. Rest in peace, brother, and our condolences to your friends and family.”

Erik Lindmark (1972-2018)

Bummed to share this update from Unique Leader Records:

It is with great sadness that we must announce that our CEO & Founder, Erik Lindmark, passed away today after battling with Cirrhosis.

The indelible mark he has left on the Death Metal genre is monumental, both as a business man and as a musician. After building this label from scratch with his Deeds bandmates, Erik took Unique Leader to a level he had never expected it, or the genre, to get to.

During his time in the Hospital, Erik was absolutely implicit with his instructions to staff – requesting that everyone go full steam ahead with the label in his absence – which is exactly what we intend to do.

That being said, we will not be releasing anything in January so that we can make the necessary adjustments and delegations within the company. We would like to thank you all for your well wishes, support and kindness toward Erik on socials and via private correspondence.

There is a GoFundMe set up for Erik’s daughter Bella (5) and his wife. Click here to donate.

Rest in peace, Erik. You were a true warrior.

I didn’t know Erik but I definitely knew Unique Leader. They were always a uniquely focused label and if you see that logo on a release, you pretty much know you’re getting tight, brutal, in your face death metal. Their roster and discography tells the story better than I can: Disgorge, Spawn of Possession, Gorgasm, Unmerciful, Pyrexia, Inveracity, Inherit Disease, Gorod, Beheaded, Soreption, Pillory, Fallujah, and of course Deeds of Flesh.

RIP, Erik. You did good.

Decibel announce 2019 tour lineup & dates

Damn, this is amazing. Not a whiff of metalcore or djent this time around and Trey’s even promising to play some Vincent-era tunes. Note that it’s CANNIBAL CORPSE and MORBID ANGEL coheadlining until the last week when Cannibal drops off and IMMOLATION comes on board as direct support. NECROT and BLOOD INCANTATION are on board for the endurance.

Press Release

The lineup for the 2019 Decibel Magazine Tour once again breaks new ground, as legendary death metallers Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel join forces for the first time ever in America to co-headline the winter tour. Rising Bay Area brutalizers Necrot and space-obsessed Denver death dealers Blood Incantation round out this once-in-a-lifetime bill. New York death metal icons Immolation will join the final week of the tour as main support to Morbid Angel, as Cannibal Corpse exit the tour after the New York City date.

“We’re really looking forward to our second appearance on the Decibel Tour; they always put together a killer line up and this time is no exception,” says Cannibal Corpse bassist Alex Webster. “We’re particularly excited to be hitting the road with our friends Morbid Angel. In fact, this will be the first time we’ve toured together in the USA.”

“Everyone here in the Morbid Angel camp are stoked to do this tour with Cannibal Corpse,” says Morbid Angel’s bassist/vocalist Steve Tucker. “To celebrate, Morbid Angel will be performing a mean-ass set of songs that will cover the entirety of our years of kicking ass.”

“We will be adding some of the older songs back to our set,” assures Morbid Angel founder Trey Azagthoth. “See you all there.”

Presented by Metal Blade Records, and sponsored by Silver Lining Music, Tankcrimes, Dark Descent Records and Nuclear Blast America, the eighth annual Decibel Magazine Tour is once again poised to be the heavy metal tour of the winter.

Tickets for the 2019 Decibel Magazine Tour go on sale Friday, November 16 at 10 AM local time and can be found at www.decibelmagazine.com/tour. All dates and venues are below.

Ola Lindgren remixes Derketa

Got this email from DERKETA today:

Thank you for checking us out on Bandcamp! I wanted to let you all know that I have updated our Bandcamp site with our remixed version of the In Death We Meet album. If you are not aware, we had the album remixed by Ola Lindgren from the band GRAVE. For those who have already downloaded the original version, you are able to download this version for free in addition to the bonus tracks that are included on the remixed CD. The bonus tracks are from a limited 300-copy 7” release in 2014: “Darkness Fades Life” and a cover of SEPULTURA’s “Troops of Doom” off of Morbid Visions.

For those that already bought the album on Bandcamp, re-download it from your Collection and you’ll get the remixed album and bonus tracks for free.

If you haven’t bought the record, you’re missing out:

“Pittsburgh’s largely unsung goddesses of death returned after a long hiatus to release their first proper full-length – a full 24 years after their inception – and luckily for us, it’s fucking MASSIVE. This is raw, primitive with a bit of polish, and above all, ungodly heavy death/doom from a cadre of ladies who were cracking skulls and tuning low while most of us were still in diapers.” ~Kim Kelly

Oh, and Derketa’s also playing a slew of shows in Chicago in the coming weeks. Maybe they’ve relocated?

More details about the new Cancer album

More details on the new CANCER album, Shadow Gripped.

The big news for me is it was produced by SIMON EFEMY (Foel Studios). Simon also produced and engineered Cancer’s Sins of Mankind (1993) and Black Vanity (1995), as well as all of PARADISE LOST’s classics, CROWBAR’s Broken Glass, NAPALM DEATH’s comeback albums and many more. His involvement bodes well for a big, clean production.

Also learned that Anders Nyström of BLOODBATH put in a guest appearance.

Hate Eternal return this October with “Upon Desolate Sands”

Rutan & co. return with their followup to 2015’s Infernus (Season of Mist) on October 26th! Rutan and J.J. Hrubovcak return on guitar/vox & bass, respectively but Hannes Grossman replaces Chason Westmoreland on drums. Eliran Kantor provides amazing art once again. Assuming Rutan produced & mixed at Mana Studios.

From SEASON OF MIST:

Legendary death metal juggernaut HATE ETERNAL return with Upon Desolate Sands, their heaviest and most ambitious album to date. Helmed by extreme metal luminary Erik Rutan, the new album sees the band take another huge step forward in their quest to push death metal to its outermost limits. From the scorching opener “Violent Fury”, through to the epic, hypnotic, 2-part title track closer, Upon Desolate Sands showcases a band operating at peak performance and sees Hate Eternal raise the bar yet again.

“Death…is Just the Beginning” is also a tour

This was announced way back in April, but bears repeating now that we’re a bit closer to the dates and NUCLEAR BLAST has announced the resurrection of the Death…is Just the Beginning compilation series this tour is taking its name from.

From Nuclear Blast:

Montréal based melodic death metallers KATAKLYSM announce that they will be teaming up with Swedish death metal legends HYPOCRISY for a European co-headline tour! After several years without any touring activities, the band with Peter Tägtgren (PAIN, LINDEMANN) is back in business; Kataklysm will release their upcoming studio record, Meditations on June 1st, 2018 through Nuclear Blast. The tour’s special name traces back to Nuclear Blast’s popular sampler series and promises nothing but evenings of moshpits and endless devastation. Don’t miss out on this outstanding tour and secure your tickets now!

From Kataklysm’s Maurizio Iacono:

“It’s been in talks for over two years and finally both Kataklysm and our brothers in Hypocrisy can make the schedule work to join forces once more. It’s been almost 15 years since we toured together and the last time we did the tours became instant classics. It‘s that time again folks… Kataklysm & Hypocrisy team up once more for a world tour beginning with Europe this fall. To make things even greater our record label Nuclear Blast has come on board and baptized the tour “Death…is Just the Beginning”, a homage to the old classic compilations that made so many fans discover both bands back in the day. This will mark the return of this classic compilation with this tour and maybe give other artists the chance to get discovered like we did. DO NOT MISS THIS TOUR, YOU ONLY GET ONE CHANCE!”

From Hypocrisy’s Peter Tägtgren:

“I hope that you are just as excited as we are, because we are very happy to announce that we are finally warming up the Hypocrisy engine again and that we will be back on the road in fall! We will be touring Europe together with our friends in Kataklysm! The tour will be an overview of the chaos and confusion created by Hypocrisy over the years. See you out there!”

While the tour is the big news, seeing Hypocrisy up on two feet again is a good sign. It’s about time for another album from them.

Unleashed announce new album for 2018

Update: First song is out and it rips. YouTube embed below. Like and share that shit.

From NAPALM RECORDS:

The Hunt For White Christ is the fourth album in the continued story line of the World of Odalheim and their Midgard warriors – a story authored by Johnny Hedlund himself, comprising of the past, present, and what Hedlund’s deems as the future of the Viking traditions and values. The album was recorded in the spring of 2018 at Chrome Studios, and does not simply mark the Swedes’ 13th full-length album: it also solidifies the bands impact on history, paving the way to their 30th anniversary in 2019.

Looks like it’ll be available in all the usual formats plus a limited edition boxset.

“Death…is Just the Beginning” returns

Nuclear Blast are reviving their old Death …is Just the Beginning death metal compilation series and for anyone old to remember geeking out over the first few installments of this series (before they turned it into video compilations and started putting power metal bands on it) or Roadrunner’s similar At Death’s Door series, it looks like they may be doing it right.

Right off the bat, the cover art is solidly in line with the early entries. It’s a painting in a single dominant color with a cross and a graveyard and a church and a spooky monk…check, check, check. Not sure who the artist is, but the style is appropriately Wåhlin-esque. And they got the logo & typography right. So far, so good.

But the best thing about the early comps were the slightly offbeat track selections. They didn’t always just pull a track from the album; they would often use a remix or an alternate mix, an unreleased track or sometimes a demo from an upcoming release. For the revival, we’re getting the following:

  1. Benediction – Tear Off These Fucking Wings (demo)
  2. Kataklysm – The Awakener (re-recorded)
  3. Hypocrisy – They Lie (The Exploited cover)
  4. The Spirit – Illuminate The Night Sky
  5. Memoriam – The War Rages On (demo)
  6. Insidious Disease – Soul Excavation
  7. Possessed – Abandoned (demo)
  8. Thy Art Is Murder – The Son Of Misery
  9. Immolation – Morbid Visions (featuring Max Cavalera) (Sepultura cover)
  10. Nailed To Obscurity – King Delusion
  11. Bleeding Gods – Beloved By Artemis
  12. Decapitated – Sane (Meshuggah cover)
  13. Aenimus – Before The Eons
  14. Paradise Lost – Frozen Illusion
  15. Carcass – A Wraith In The Apparatus
  16. Brujeria – Viva Presidente Trump!

A couple clunkers and a few bands I haven’t heard of, but overall this is pretty dead on.

The release is out September 10, 2018 on the following formats:

  • Boxset — Atomic green 2xLP in a gatefold sleeve with CD, patch, and poster. Limited to 500 copies worldwide.
  • Green & black splatter 2xLP in a gatefold sleeve. Limited to 200 copies.
  • Green & red splatter 2xLP . in a gatefold sleeve.
  • Black 2xLP in a gatefold sleeve.
  • Jewelcase CD
  • Cassette

There’ll be a tshirt and longsleeve as well.

Frank Mullen’s last ride

Sad to see the day:

“Hello my friends — so this is it, after 30 years of being a part of this amazing band, which I have had the opportunity to tour the world and bring our music to the sickest fans on the planet, it has come to this time — I bid you a farewell.

“I would like to thank first and foremost, all of my brothers in SUFFOCATION who I have shared the stage with over the years. We have had the sickest of times on the road, and recorded some of the sickest fucking music the planet has ever heard. Secondly I want to thank all our fans and friends worldwide, who have helped make this journey possible by supporting us unconditionally. None of this would have been possible without you. So in closing, I will miss you all. This has been the craziest ride of my life and I would not change a thing! Until we meet up again take care, stay brutal and I look forward to the next chapter.

“But before I take my final step off the stage, to give back to all of you who have supported, me and the boys are going to head out on the ‘Death Chopping North America’ tour. Along with some insane support acts including CATTLE DECAPITATION, KRISIUN, and SOREPTION! I hope to see you all for one last ride across North America. Stay brutal.”
